Sparrows

Go to any restaurant and eat outdoors, and you can’t help but notice those little brown birds hopping around, looking for food. Those are sparrows, and they’re found in nearly every country. In fact, scientists think that there are 140 different kinds in the world.

They live in hot places, and they can be seen living in colder places, but they don’t like living where there’s lots of snow.

They are only about six inches long, which is half the size of a ruler. Different types of sparrows can be a bit larger or a bit smaller, but six inches is the average.

They are not scared of taking food from pigeons, because they are faster and smarter. They are also interesting in other ways.

Even though they are small, sparrows have very big feet, which they use to scratch the ground, in search of seeds to eat.

They then use their beaks to help them to peck at the seeds. Although they are mostly a plain, brown colour, that doesn’t mean you don’t notice them, because they have beautiful voices, and can be quite noisy. You may have heard them arguing in trees.

When building their nests, these birds take their work very seriously. Their nests are built low to the ground, and they make them of grass, or little pieces of wood, or plants.

Once the nest is complete, the female lays four to five small white eggs, and it takes less than two weeks for the babies to appear.

All sparrows mainly eat seeds, but they also eat insects and fruit, when available. They feed only insects to their young babies, however.

Sparrows are social birds and they live in groups. They have smooth, round heads, and rounded wings. The males have reddish feathers on their backs, while the females are brown and striped, and they both have short tails.
