When there is a war, countries try and use bombs without letting their own soldiers getting hurt. With this in mind, a lot of countries like to use land mines. A land mine is a bomb that is put on the ground.

The idea is that the mine explodes when something goes by.

This kind of bomb is called a mine because the people who put them there have to dig holes in the ground. The people who dig for coal in coal mines do very similar work and are called miners.

These bombs are very dangerous, but what is really terrible is that they kill and injure normal people living in villages, because they walk around without knowing about the danger under the ground.

Sometimes mines can lie in the ground for years after a war has ended.

Some countries send teams of experts to try and remove these mines, but it is very slow and dangerous work. Until they are all gone, the land cannot be used by people to live on and grow food on.

Now, something incredible has happened. A young girl has invented a landmine detector to find all kinds of mines, both plastic mines and metal mines.

The science involved is very clever, and she got the idea while she was playing her guitar, and some things in her room started to make a noise. This invention could make it possible for many more mines to be removed in a much safer way.

The main way of finding mines at the moment uses metal detectors, which don’t always work because a lot of mines are made of plastic.

Mice for example, are very good at smelling the mines and a lot of teams use them. But again, it’s slow work. What is needed is a safe method where lots of mines can be found at one time instead of slowly finding them one by one.
