Comic Book day

If you are a comic book fan, or just love free things, you are in luck, because Saturday, May 6 is Free Comic Book Day. As the name suggests, this is the day when comic shops everywhere will give out free comic books to anyone who walks into the shop. Don’t get too excited, because this doesn’t apply to other books or magazines, just to comic books. So, if you like comic books, make your way to your local comic bookshop to collect your free gift.

This annual event, which began in 2002, happens on the first Saturday of May, and was the idea of a man called Joe Field. He was the owner of a shop called the Flying Colours Comics & Other Cool Stuff, and he was inspired by the success of similar events like Free Cone Day. So, he thought about the best way of doing this, and made a plan. He then explained the idea to shopkeepers, publishers, and distributors, and they were very interested in getting involved.

His objective was very simple. He thought this idea would make more people, both young and old, visit their local comic shops, and that they would then start to enjoy reading comic books. The idea worked very well, and over the past sixteen years, shopkeepers have given away over 12 million comic books, and the numbers are only growing. Many more people have become interested in comics, and they wait for this day to get their free comic books.

There is a little problem, because not every comic book in the shop is free. However, with 50 specially published titles to choose from, there is something to suit every taste. Even if you are not interested in any of the comics in the shop, a visit there might still be worth the effort. That’s because the shopkeepers usually sell all their other comics, and other things in the shop, at a lower price on this fun day. It has become a day for bargains, and not only for free comics.
