The Kazakh People

There is an area in the north of China where the Kazakh people live, and these people are famous for how they hunt. Because they are nomads, which means they are always moving, they keep goats and sheep to give them food and all basic things they need, like milk and animal skins.

Living in this way is very dangerous because wild animals like wolves try to attack their animals for food. This means they have to protect their animals from these wolves, which live in the mountains, and they use eagles, which are big hunting birds, to do that. This is a very difficult thing to do, but they have been doing it for centuries.

To train the eagles, an eagle trainer drags the skin of a dead wolf behind his horse. At the same time, another hunter, far away in the hills, releases the eagle he has been training since birth. The eagle sees the wolf skin behind the horse, and attacks it. They practise together so often that the eagle becomes a very good hunter and identifies his handler as his owner.

The golden eagles have become like members of the family to the Kazakh people. They fly high and look out for any wolves that may be attacking. The people know that without the eagle’s help they would most likely starve, and so the birds are treated with a lot of respect. They are seen as part of the family and they get the best food available.
