Itaipu Dam

People build dams on rivers because this is a great way to get energy, and the biggest dam ever built was built in 1984. It is called the Itaipu dam, and is as big as a building with sixty-five floors. The dam gets its energy from The Parana River, which flows between Brazil and Paraguay.

The Parana River is in South America, which has quite a few very big rivers, but very few are as big as The Parana River. There used to be a very big waterfall on this river, but they had to blow it up to make it safer to travel along the river.

The name of this dam comes from a small island in the river, which was very close to where the dam was built, and it took five years to start building it, once Brazil and Paraguay agreed that it was a good idea to go ahead.

In 1994, this dam was so famous that it was chosen to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world, and it was so difficult to build that the river had to be moved from where it normally flowed, just to make space to work. Such work had never been tried before.

The Itaipu Dam is not one dam but actually four different dams, which were built to support the main dam. More than 40,000 men were needed to build the dam, and they nearly all came from Brazil. Sadly, about 150 of them were killed.
