Meow Cat Café

Coco, Latte and Leo are relaxing and stretching out at a café in Toronto. But they’re not humans, they’re cats. Meow Cat Café is one of four places in the Canadian city where cat lovers can enjoy doing two of their favourite things, which are drinking coffee and playing with cats. Petting the cats is very good for your mind. It calms people, says Erica Yun, the owner of the café. While Yun and her daughter, Helen, serve up coffee, customers get to spend time with the cats.

Some of the other places let people come and relax with the cats without worrying about what they do. This place is different because, unlike other cafés, Meow Cat Café has a few rules. For instance, customers can only stay for an hour, after which they have to leave, although they can come back after another hour. Also, the safety gates have to stay closed and everyone has to take their shoes off. There are six cats at the café, each a different kind. The cats, including Zeze, Chanel and Elsa, are the personal pets of the owners.

Meow Cat Café doesn’t only offer coffee and cat fun. It also sells other things for both pets and humans. For example, for animals it has the things you need if you have pets, such as cat jackets, food bowls and pillows. For humans, there’s handmade jewellery, and things for people who may be interested in Korean pop culture. Cat cafés are popular in Korea and all over Asia, according to Yun, although this is an unusual idea for European and American people.

We spoke to a few of the people who regularly visit this place to find out why they liked it so much. Some people said they were very lonely and the cats had become their friends. One customer said she liked going to the café because it gave her the pleasure of having a cat, without having to worry about looking after it. Nobody had a bad word to say for the idea, which makes me wonder why there aren’t more places like this, here in Canada, and in other countries.
